Nonmaterialistic Valentine’s Day Ideas

Tomorrow comes the day that 99.9% revolves around women: Valentine’s Day. I’m all for ladies getting spoiled with flowers, chocolates, and gifts galore, but way too much pressure is put on men to live up to the Hollywood expectations of this cliché celebration. Let’s face it girlfriend, sometimes your man will miss the mark. He’ll miss it not because he didn’t try hard enough or he doesn’t care enough, but because you have this ingrained idea of what Valentine’s Day should look like. Personally, I could care less about Valentine’s Day. Expressions of love and affection should not be limited to one day out of the 365-day year. More importantly, material gifts should not equate to how much your significant other loves you because love don’t cost a thing (J.Lo Voice).

If you have plans tomorrow, you most likely have certain expectations. Whether you’re expecting dinner at a 5-star restaurant or your boyfriend to propose marriage, please do not get your hopes up darling. Simply enjoy the day with the love of your life. Be present, but do not demand presents.

Now that my semi-rant is over, I want to share with you some inexpensive and invaluable ways to show your sweetie how much you appreciate him. This list is perfect for you last-minute Lola’s out there. Happy Valentine’s Day!

1. Turn Off Your Phone or Leave it at Home
You must think I’m absolutely crazy bananas to suggest this and I don’t blame you. By the standards of this day and age, going without our precious phones for even 10 minutes is like going without oxygen. We as a society have a terrible addiction to our cellular devices and the need of connection (social media). Abstaining from your phone for one night would provide your love with the perfect gift: YOUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION. And, yes this means you cannot document your night on Snapchat and Instagram. Trust me. There is nothing better than IRL human connection. #sorrynotsorry

2. Treat Him to His Favorite Dish/Dessert
Does he enjoy brownies or is he a pizza enthusiast? Treat your love muffin to whatever his favorite food is, but with a twist. Buy cookie cutters to make heart-shaped sweets. Make breakfast in bed complete with heart-shaped red velvet pancakes with a side of sunny side eggs and bacon. You get the picture. Like the saying goes, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Steal his heart ladies!

3. Create Envelopes of Endearment
These are better known as “Open When” envelopes. One of my best friends did this for her boyfriend last year and I thought it was the cutest thing ever! The idea is simple. Gather some envelopes and on the outside write “Open When…” + an emotion. For example: Open When You’re Feeling Sad. Inside the envelope insert a letter, picture, or small object that will bring happiness on a rainy day. Once you complete your envelopes, spray them with perfume and seal them with a kiss. You can wrap them with twine or put them in a nice box. I love this because it’s like a gift that keeps on giving.

Let me know in the comments how you will be spending your Valentine’s Day!
